Yesterday, I wrote about making goals clear and specific and plugging them into a model starting with results and ending with thoughts. Let's turn that model upside down with the result of "Getting a handle on my anxiety". You can still start with the result and work your way up or start anywhere on the model and fill in the pieces. The most important thing here is to realize that thoughts create feelings. Feelings drive actions. Actions create results.
Circumstance: New Years goal of learning to manage my anxiety.
Thoughts: I will figure this out. I am willing to concentrate my energy on this one thing. I am capable of learning how to do this.
(These thoughts would drive feelings of...)
Feelings: Determination. Excitement. Motivation.
(These feelings would create the actions of...)
Actions: 1) Read 3 books about it. 2) Learn tools from a counsellor. 3) Focus on implementing those tools every day.
(These actions would create the result of...)
Result: Get a handle on my anxiety. Feeling in control of my anxiety. Living a less anxious life.
From the above model of thoughts-feelings-actions-results, you break it down. You stay away from overwhelm and confusion because those are indulgent, get-you-nowhere feelings. You commit to taking committed action until you achieve the result you want. You check in with your thoughts regularly and clean them up so that they serve you rather than hinder you.
Are you interested in learning more about the above model? Do you struggle with anxiety and want to get a handle on it in the coming months? Consider hiring an expert to walk alongside you.
Until next time,
