Travelling Toward vs. Thinking About

Are you struggling to get from point A to point B?  That is where I am today.  I spend more time thinking about point B than I do travelling there these days.  I justify that thinking about it is productive in some way.  Oh, brain.  The truth of the matter is that I'm scared and so I stay in thinking mode.  Travelling there feels uncertain, overwhelming, and risky.  I'd rather stay in my comfortable cave, except now that comfort is starting to feel uncomfortable.  That comfort is starting to spin into paralysis, negative self talk, and plain and simple avoidance spun into nice-sounding excuses.

Travelling toward what I want takes much more courage and energy than thinking about it does.  Here are the four things I am doing to pull myself out of paralysis:

1. I am telling myself I will spend 10 minutes at a time on the actual travelling toward what I want.  This is 10 minutes taking action vs. reflecting and thinking.

2. I am telling myself to start with one thing.  And then do the next thing.  I am NOT thinking about all the things and succumbing to overwhelm.

3. I am telling myself that when I feel discomfort, I will celebrate, because discomfort means I'm moving toward what I want.

4. I am giving myself permission to do B-minus work.  That way, I will not succumb to perfectionism and do nothing.

If you are in the same boat, will you join me in getting unstuck?  Here's to 10 minutes of uncomfortable B-minus work today and all the days ahead!

Until next time,
