One of the values important to me is simplicity. Simplicity in every area of my life enhances my well-being and efficiency, and helps me feel happier. Living this value is a work in progress for me, and this coming year, I would like to really hone in on simplicity and embody it more fully.
I have broken down simplicity into specific areas that I will focus on this year. Because I noticed a theme of “less” when I was brainstorming, I am calling this project “My Year of Less”.
Less scrolling/screen time: I will get into the habit of leaving my phone downstairs at bedtime. I will check email and social media only twice per day.
Less clutter: This is a category that needs to be broken down into smaller chunks, but basically I will tidy up after myself more frequently and only purchase/live with what is necessary and brings a smile to my face (children, I won’t get rid of you:))
Less multi-tasking: I will practice working on one thing for a large block of time rather than switching from activity to activity.
Less overindulging on food: overeating causes me to feel and behave in a way that does not enhance important relationships, mental clarity, and the simplicity I strive for. I want to practice eating until full no matter what the circumstance.
Less clothing: I have not quite fleshed this one out all the way. Although I purge my closet somewhat regularly, it still feels like I have too many clothes I do not wear. I only want clothing around that I love and feel great in. I’m thinking of starting a system where I rotate through the clothes in my closet daily in order to simplify decision making.
Less fluff in my business: I will only do the things in my business that move the needle (these often are the things that feel the most uncomfortable and require the most courage). I will batch similar tasks together and work on those things in larger blocks in order to simplify.
Do you ever set an intention or make a big plan and then forget about it? In order to keep my Year of Less fresh in my mind, I will print out the above and hang it in a prominent place. I also just noticed that there are six items of “less”. Perhaps I will rotate through these 6 on a monthly basis, keeping all 6 in mind, but being laser focused on one per month.
I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas for your own 2018. Tag me on Instagram @engagecounsellingbc or on facebook @engagecounselling with the ways you are planning on living out your values this coming year!
