why should I see a counsellor?

I believe that most of the time, most human beings are capable of “handling” their lives—moving through the ups and downs, problem solving, and generally managing life. However, there may be times when professional support can be useful and even essential to your well-being. Some of these times may include:

1. When crisis hits. Crisis often comes unexpected and is hard on us. Sometimes the pain and hurt are so great that they overwhelm us. It can feel like you are drowning and have no sense of which way is up. Seeing a counsellor during this time can be a source of calm and comfort. A good counsellor will not only listen to you, but will give you tools to understand the pain, gain perspective, and move through the crisis.

2. When you feel stuck. Perhaps you are struggling with an ingrained destructive habit, an endless loop of anxiety, or a depression that immobilizes you. Living with these struggles has a sizable impact on the way you live your life, and can keep you from living life to its fullest. A counsellor can help you identify obstacles and work with you to develop skills and habits that will help get you unstuck and move you in your desired direction.

3. When you are at a crossroad. Are you contemplating a big decision? Seeing a counsellor may help you gain clarity if you are at a crossroad in your life. A counsellor can offer an objective, unbiased perspective, as well as offer options and ideas you may not have thought of. A great counsellor has mastered the art of asking effective questions designed to help you clarify what is most important to you.
