Delayed gratification

It seems that a lot of worthwhile things in life come as the product of delayed gratification.  Save your money over months or years for a downpayment.  Eat healthy and months later, see a change in your body.  Go through the process of healing childhood wounds and feel more whole and balanced eventually.  Start a business and stay consistent, and the rewards come years later.

What makes delayed gratification so difficult is that it's intangible at the moment.  We are creatures of seeing, knowing, and wanting things to happen now.  There is a looming gap between now and the future.  How do we deal with this?

One way to deal with the gap is this -  ask yourself: What does now hold?  What treasure is right here in front of my face that I'm not seeing?  The treasure could be many things including clarity of mind, satisfaction, peace, pride, commitment, or keeping your word.

Until next time,
