MythBuster: you need willpower to stop binge eating

I want there to be nothing willpower-y about your eating habits.  Because when willpower runs out (yes, this is a thing – willpower is a function of the brain and we have verrrry limited amounts of it), you’re screwed.

You only ever have 15 minutes of willpower on board at a time.  15 minutes.  You use willpower every time you make a decision, focus on a task, or regulate your emotions.  15 minutes?  It’s not a lot.

I want you to save your willpower for everything in your life EXCEPT food.  Depending on willpower is the weakest strategy you can have.  Willpower is a fleeting and fairweather friend.

My clients do not willpower their way through their food life.  They use something much more lasting and powerful: science and habits.

We use the science of how the brain deals with hunger, fullness, and cravings to build a brain that doesn’t get hungry and doesn’t crave.  In other words, we create a brain that isn’t constantly hounding you for allllll the food.

Then we use what we know about willpower (it’s a biological function of the brain with a 15-minute charge and decision making taps it out) to build habits which don’t require a shred of willpower to execute because they’re, well, habits.

In my work with clients, we make things easier, not harder.  We do not use willpower to stop binge eating.  In fact, we never depend on willpower.  It’s too iffy.  And it feels hard.  Instead, we make this so easy.

No willpower is required.
